CBS Jumps The Gun

Posted on 24 March 2010 by Colum ODwyer

While many are counting down the days till the iPad Launches it seems like CBS has jumped the gun. Yesterday At 10:21pm when I went to go watch the latest tv shows on CBS.com on their home page i found two interesting video clips. The pictures are placed below it seems that CBS has begun testing iPad video for their website. However, it is still a Flash based video player which leaves many questions left open, mainly why is CBS testing a Flash video for the iPad.

Update: As Macrumors.com reported after we ran our story they investigated the css of the page to discover that there was in fact references to HTML 5 as well as several parts of webkit.

    Great catch!

  2. Kevin H. Patterson Says:

They can test it using a Flash player because the iPhone an iPod use QuickTime to play H.264 video. Adobe added H.264 support to Flash some time back.

I think HTML5, SVG, and CSS3 will ultimately replace Flash. RIP.

  67. CBS Moving to Flash-Less Video - Apple Gazette Says:

[...] Well apparently, it is somewhat of a big deal, because people are working diligently to produce good media for it, and we don’t even have the thing yet. Take CBS for example. Sure, it’s a big deal that Flash isn’t on the iPad/iPhone/iPod Touch, and sure, their whole video site is based on it, but no biggie right? They’ll just take the hit on viewers. As it turns out though, my grandmother’s favorite network is changing around their site to use HTML5 compatible video, according to MacRumors. Let’s let their words do some speaking: With the imminent arrival of the Apple iPad, it seems at least one major television network is updating their website to provide video playback support for new tablet device — without Flash. CBS.com’s website began displaying a couple of strange “iPad – test” video links, first noted by The Other Mac Blog.
